During the month of Ramadan Palestinian director Hamdan Ballal encountered violent harassment from Israeli settlers at his residence in the village of Susya that is located within the West Bank region. The assailants launched their attack while Ballal conducted videotaping of the settlement entrance into his native region at the moment when the daily Ramadan fasting ends.
Multiple armed and masked settlers along with soldiers of the Israeli military attacked Ballal's home during this event. The perpetrators destroyed property through window-breaking actions while they cut the tires of parked vehicles. Ballal received blows to his head before the Israel Defense Forces detained him for more than 20 hours. At the time of his detention soldiers derided him about his Oscar win.
The targeting has provoked global criticism because it reveals the intensifying conflicts taking place in the West Bank area. Ballal together with his fellow directors think the assault occurred because their movie revealed the problems Palestinians experience during Israeli military occupation. "No Other Land" reveals Israeli military and settler initiatives to move Palestinians out of Masafer Yatta thus attracting international interest in the current conflict.
Ballal maintains absolute dedication to Palestine regardless of the violent conditions. Such violent incidents do not affect his resolve to continue showing the people of his community through videos. The violent attack illuminates the extended problems Palestinian activists together with residents in occupied territories face due to settler violence.
This incident received incongruent reactions from across the international world. Some important figures demand accountability while organizations like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are receiving criticism for their lack of public response to this event. International support demonstrates complex features while simultaneously showing significant trouble when attempting to investigate human rights violations within conflict areas.
